Between the Sea and Sky

I have to admit, I was drawn in initially by the cover of this book. I mean look at it! So fantastical and mesmerizing. Then when I read the description.. knowing that it was a book about mermaids.. I hesitated. Did I really want to dive into this book when so many other mermaid themed books left me drowning in frustration? But I braved the muddy waters of -what had been a lackluster theme for me- and came out pleasantly refreshed !

"For as long as Esmerine can remember, she has longed to join her older sister, Dosinia, as a siren--the highest calling a mermaid can have. When Dosinia runs away to the mainland, Esmerine is sent to retrieve her. Using magic to transform her tail into legs, she makes her way unsteadily to the capital city. There she comes upon a friend she hasn't seen since childhood--a dashing young man named Alandare, who belongs to a winged race of people. As Esmerine and Alandare band together to search for Dosinia, they rekindle a friendship . . . and ignite the emotions for a love so great, it cannot be bound by sea, land, or air."

Through the first few chapters I could not help but compare Esmerine to Ariel in The Little Mermaid. The oddball of not only her family, but her village, for her unnatural interest in all things human. Most specifically Books and her Fardasee ( Winged race ) friend Alander. Other things that I felt were "Little Mermaid-esk" were the way her village engaged in theatrics and singing, I could picture King Trident Swimming up on his chariot waiting for his daughters to sing. Sigh... While at first these connections irked me, I grew to love it

This is not a "modern day mermaid tale" in fact it is more of a historical. The author weaves a wonderful tale of a girl in search of his sister in the human world, only to be distracted by all the new wonders surrounding her. After spending your entire life with a fin, and swimming around topless, I'm sure I would have found the boning in the dresses of that time quite irritating as well. Not to mention the twist the author puts on a mermaids ability to transform her fin into human legs. They can do it at will, easy peasy, but they will endure pain with every step they take on their human feet. Most mermaids/mermen do not care for walking on land, but Esmerine and her sister Dosia embrace it so that they can interact with their new friend Alander as he brings them books and teaches them to read and write.

I enjoyed the fact that much of the story is spent on land as Esmerine learns of the Wonder and Quirks of the human world while searching for her sister, and learning what has become of her childhood friend. I have to say.. I did not like Alander one bit when Esmerine saw him again.. But you learn why he is the way he is, and you grow to understand and adore him, at least I did :)

The one thing I disliked most about this book was the ending. It all happened to fast! I won't give out spoilers.. I just wish the author had spent a little more time on the twist she gave at the end. It felt rushed. and while I don't think this book needs to be a series (it holds it's own as a stand alone novel), I wish she had taken an extra chapter or two to give a bit more added detail.

That being said.. I adored this book. I would say the reading age for this one is high Independent reader- low YA. But at the same time Older readers could appreciate it as well with the wonderful way it pulls us back to classic fairy tales.

“You ought to use a little of that siren song on Alan, my pearl.
The boy needs to loosen his cravat.”

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

" I mean asscrown. The crown on top of the asshat that covers the asshole of the assclown. The very Zenith in the hierarchy of asses,"

"Mara wakes up from a coma with no memory of the accident that caused the deaths of her best friend, boyfriend, and boyfriend's sister. The doctors tell her parents that starting over in a new state, a new school will be good for her and to let the memories come back on their own. But Mara's new start is anything but when she sees the faces of her dead friends everywhere and her world is falling apart. And then she begins to see people's deaths before they happen - at least she thinks that is what is happening. On top of that, the most beautiful boy she has ever seen can't seem to leave her alone, but is his agenda more than he leads on?"

Some times the type Hype can be a new books downfall. The rave reviews from other authors or friends and family, the promise of a book you can't put down. So you rush out to buy it, curl up in your book nook and dive in. You open it up and begin to take in all it has to offer... and then it.. well.. fizzles... let's you down, and it's heartbreaking.

Thankfully The unbecoming of Mara Dyer did in no way fizzle out.. instead sparks flew!

This book was refreshing, The characters real and original and breaking away from current popularity. Werewolves, Vampires, Fairies, Zombies; Do not expect these to come near this book.

Instead we get a High school girl, full of wit and smarts.. and just a touch of crazy ( ok. more than a touch.. she is seeing dead people after all ) A Boy that will make you swoon, scream in frustration and then swoon again! A rumored bad boy with a heart of gold; but the cliche works for him!

The witty repartee between the two characters will leave you laughing, and their growing romance will leave you jealous!

The one downside I had with this book was the ending. But not just because it was over and I wanted more.   While this book is considered Paranormal fiction.. you don't really get into the nitty gritty of the "paranormal activity" until the last few chapters. And it may leave you wondering.. umm.. huh? Where did that come from? Thankfully this is a trilogy to come, so lets hope the author lets us in on a bit more of a back story and really lets us in on how all of this crazyness came to be.. unfortunately.. we have to wait far too long for #2!

Grab this book as soon as you can and prepare for an all-nighter !

"There," he said as he finished tying the laces of my left shoe. "Now you won't fall." Too Late.

Turned at Dark

"She had about as much energy as a snail on Xanax, skinny-dipping in a cup of chamomile tea."

I had actually found this book as a free download at B&N weeks before stumbling upon Born at midnight. and to be honest.. didn't make the connection until part way through B.A.M !! It was fate. After Finishing C.C. Hunter's first book in the Shadow Falls series I HAD to have more, and lucky me I had this to fall back on!

With the same lighthearted and fun feel that we get from Born at Midnight C.C. let's us in on Della's tale of how she was turned into a  vampire and made her way to Shadow fall's camp.

I can only hope that C.C. Hunter continues with the short stories, set aside on their own, or mixed into the rest of the stories. I loved getting more incite into a character I loved and want more!

Even if you don't have an e-reader you can download this story to your computer or mobile device from B&N or other sources. And I recommend that you do... like.. now?!....  After reading Born at Midnight of course :)

Paranormalcy

“Oh relax." I waved my hand dismissively. "If he wanted to kill me, he already would have. I brought him all these sharp pencils, ideal for stabbing, and he's been a perfect gentleman.”

"Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie’s always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she's falling for a shape-shifter, and she's the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal.

Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal."

Reasons to love this book:
*Evie's #1 weapon... a Pink rhindstone studded taster she affectionately calls "Tasey".
* The mysterious new supernatural named Lend, a boy who can change his appearance anytime he wishes.
* Evie's best friend, a mermaid who's words are translated through a computer that refuses to acknowledge swear words and inserts "bleep" in their place.
*Reth, Evie's creepy ex faerie boyfriend.. who is literally trying to pull her back into his world.

I cannot wait for the next in this trilogy. A book that can make me laugh out loud, cringe empathetically for the characters, sigh at a sweet romance AND keep me on my toes with the twists and action? My kinda book!
