DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU HAVE NOT READ BOOK 1!

Synopsis via Goodreads:

The second installment in the all-new series from the masterful, #1 NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater!

Now that the ley lines around Cabeswater have been woken, nothing for Ronan, Gansey, Blue, and Adam will be the same. Ronan, for one, is falling more and more deeply into his dreams, and his dreams are intruding more and more into waking life. Meanwhile, some very sinister people are looking for some of the same pieces of the Cabeswater puzzle that Gansey is after..

The first book in this series was something I started two different times before I read the whole thing. I just couldn't get into it but once I did, I was not disappointed.   I liked the first book but I LOVED the second one, The Dream Thieves was better in all facets.  The characters have greatly evolved and the story has become even more intense.  Cabeswater is no longer a dream, it is a reality.

There is still that lingering intense feeling that the first book had but there is a lot more to the plot in the second.  Multiple things were happening at the same time rather than just the search of Cabeswater and Gansey's impending death. There is a mysterious grey man, lots of  "dreaming", and someone develops a new paranormal ability.  The book ends in a way that you want the third immediately.

The romance is very subtle and that is definitely refreshing. I would recommend this book to those YA paranormal readers looking for something different.  The Welsh mythology in this story makes it an entirely unique read.  I really enjoyed it.

Synopsis via Goodreads:

Koldan Holdt knows what he wants. The problem is his future was decided the day he was born—a future void of everything he has ever known.

Days before summer vacation, Koldan’s grandfather suddenly dies, leaving the consequences that have followed him since he fled his country to fall to Koldan. As Koldan learns about his new fate, he must accept the terms to which he is bound and live without the one person he wants, or remain true to who he is and risk both their lives repeating the choices his grandfather made.

Seventeen-year-old Raya Whitney thought she knew Koldan…until a sudden turn of events threatens both their lives. While she is not willing to give up without a fight, she knows it is a deadly game to stay together.

This book was suspenseful, a real tense page turner, and I thought about it long after I was done reading.  I am surprised that a non-paranormal book like this was able to steal my attention so quickly.  Only chapters into the book the plot takes off that sends Koldan, Lukas, Raya, and Ethan on a wild goose chase to figure out Koldan's grandfather's secrets.  There is some definite sexual tension in this book but not between just Raya and Koldan but between Raya and about every male character in the book.  Raya has got Teen Girl Problems!

My only worry about this book is the length, it's long.  For people that love to read, 400 pages is no big deal BUT for teens it might seem daunting.  The descriptions are very wordy and elaborate; I found myself sometimes skipping sentences at points just to get to the good parts.  I just wanted to know what happened, I didn't want to stop for a description of something.  BUT besides the length, I loved it! It was one of those that I wished I had the second book immediately.  I should really just start reading series after all the books are out, life would be much easier!  Does anyone else do this?

Another thing I would like to ramble about is the ending.  The ending leaves so much up in the air.  I have a love-hate relationship with endings like this one.  I hate it because I usually have to wait a very long time to find out what happened next but I love it because it makes a book I continue to think about long after reading.  I just want to know how all these pieces are going to be put back together again, argh!

Render: An Excerpt

I spin around and pull her to me, sighing as her arms lock around my neck. I lower my face to her hair, turning it into the curve of her neck to breathe her in. Her body molds to mine, lithe and boneless, and my arms swallow her as I tighten my hold. It softens all the hard points, the tension I’d been holding onto, smoothing the muscles in my shoulders and back. “You have great problem-solving skills, by the way,” I tell her softly in her ear. Keeping her arms around me, she leans back against the wall to look at me, a baffled expression on her face, whether in relation to the compliment or the unexpected direction in conversation, I don’t know. “Do I?” Her voice lifts in a flirtatious pitch. “Mmm. It’s why I asked you out,” I tease. “You solved most of my problems just by agreeing.” Looking back, I realize just how true this is, though I doubt she’ll take me seriously. Her lips curl in an obliging smile, and her eyes say it all, disbelieving in their beauty, corroborating what I already knew. But she’s still smiling, and I alone am responsible for that. She curls her hand around the side of my neck, and I feel her thumb glide over the scar behind my earlobe, one I incurred at fourteen, when Lukas slammed my head into the bathroom mirror. Then I broke his collarbone. Both of us ended up in the emergency room that morning, an incident that resulted in our father leaving for work a half hour later. It’s always quieter when our father is home. “How are you doing?” she asks, looking up to search my eyes. I slide my hands from the small of her back to her waist, as my gaze sweeps from shoulder to shoulder. I can already feel the ground of normalcy beneath me, her presence holding the pieces of my life together, when it seems everything can come apart at any moment. “Good now that you’re here.” This seems to make her both happy and sad. A look of gloom passes over her face even as a small smile touches her lips. Then her eyes trail down the front of my body, taking in my suit jacket and pants. “You look like a lawyer,” she comments. “Straight from the courtroom.” I can’t remember a time when she’s ever seen me in a suit. The closest is the tux I wore to her senior prom two months ago, which is not much different than what I wear now. “It suits you.” I raise my eyebrows in doubt. “What? Looking like a lawyer?” “Not just a lawyer. You look…professional.” Then, with a full smile, she adds, “I like it.” “Ah,” I say, mirroring her smile as I grasp her meaning. “I like that you’re my biggest fan.” Her teeth shine bright against her tan skin. She drops her arms to her sides, and I lace my fingers through hers. She smells of honeysuckle, vanilla, and lavender all at once, with soft underlying notes I can’t name, a scent that swirls inside me, tantalizing every cell in my body. I lean forward, canting my head slightly to fit my lips to hers. I have to fight to keep the rhythm slow, to savor every second. But when her mouth opens, urgency builds within me, and I press farther. Too soon, though, she’s pulling away, leaving my blood pumping in a hot stream and my heart pounding against my chest. I place a hand on the wall behind her and lean forward, closing the narrow space she’s put between us. “I wasn’t finished,” I say. I’m already tilting my head to kiss her again when she stops me with one word. “Wait.” “Wait?” I mutter against her lips. I feel her palms on my chest, easing me back. It’s hard to concentrate on anything but touching her, but I slowly resign myself to the conversation that is apparently inevitable, when my only instinct is to kiss her. I straighten and meet her eyes, which does nothing to tame my thoughts. “I got your note,” she says. When I started mowing Mrs. Whitney’s lawn, Elizabeth gave me a key, so I could let myself in when they weren’t home. In the beginning, I would leave Raya notes on her dresser, not knowing at the time that she’d actually keep them. When she showed me every note I’d ever written her, my first instinct was to laugh, because it seemed senseless. But then I saw how impressed she was and felt empowered that I could make her so happy. She probably has a shoebox full of notes by now. I back her against the wall until we’re touching from hips to shoulders. Her eyes, as warm and green as summer leaves, meet mine. She’s looking at me as if I did something amazing, but just in case, I ask, “Is that all? Or is there something else you want to add, because I’d really like to kiss you right now?” Her eyes dip momentarily to my mouth. “I was going to thank you for the note, but you distracted me.” “You don’t need words for that.”

 Synopsis via Goodreads:

Torn between two destinies…

Claire is having the perfect sixteenth birthday. Her pool party is a big success, and gorgeous Matthew keeps chatting and flirting with her as if she’s the only girl there. But that night, she discovers something that takes away all sense of normalcy: she’s a werewolf.

As Claire is initiated into the pack of female werewolves, she must deal not only with her changing identity, but also with a rogue werewolf who is putting everyone she knows in danger. Claire’s new life threatens her blossoming romance with Matthew, whose father is leading the werewolf hunt. Now burdened with a dark secret and pushing the boundaries of forbidden love, Claire is struggling to feel comfortable in either skin. With her lupine loyalty at odds with her human heart, she will make a choice that will change her forever….

This book sat on my TBR pile for along time because I thought the title was a reference to Twilight.  Yes, the song Claire de Lune is in Twilight but much to my shocking knowledge this book has nothing to do with VAMPIRES,  it is about werewolves.   Claire de Lune means moonlight in French.  Just one more way Twilight has led me astray....

I always find it interesting to know the logistics of the supernatural creatures in each book.  How are they created, how often do they change, what are the pack rules, and can someone be changed by being bit?  Given the sea of books about werewolves, I was entirely surprised that Christine Johnson had created a unique werewolf race.  You will have to read it to find about them but it is worth it!

I also find it completely weird that the synopsis does not hint at the best part of the book.  The mystery!!! There is a rogue werewolf in the area that jeopardizes the safety of the pack and no one knows the identity.  Had I known that this book was such a thriller, I would have picked it up much earlier.  I couldn't stop reading because I wanted to know the identity of the rouge.  Christine Johnson does such a great job of leading the reader to question multiple characters in the book.  Are they the rouge?  I don't know if anyone has read Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn but I read the entire book thinking it was one character and in the end bam, the unthinkable!   I had a very similar experience with Claire de Lune.

Aberrant

Aberrant by Ruth Silver

Publisher: Self Published
Release date: April 28th, 2013
Series: Book #1
Edition: Paperback,
Genre: Young Adult/Dystopian
Rating: 5/5

Synopsis via Goodreads:

In the future Dystopian society of Cabal, the government instills equality for all and offers its citizens the perfect system. There is food, shelter and jobs for everyone. The one requirement is to follow the rules without question, including the government's match in marriage and "The Day of the Chosen", a lottery that randomly selects families to conceive children as natural means hasn't existed in generations. Following her eighteenth birthday, Olivia Parker accepts her requirement to marry her childhood best friend, Joshua Warren, and is eager to start her work assignment and new life when it all comes abruptly to an end as she's arrested and thrown in prison. The only crime committed, her existence. Olivia is unlike the rest of the world born not from "The Day of the Chosen." The truth haunts the government and puts her life in grave danger as one simple fact would destroy the perfect system.

With Joshua's help, Olivia breaks free of prison and is forced on the run. Together they set out to find the promised rebel town in search of a new home and new life together. Their situation seems less than promising as they reach the town of Haven. New rules and customs must be adhered to in order to stay. Leaving would mean most certain death in the large expanse of the Gravelands. Time is running out as the government mounts an attack to destroy Olivia and bury her secret with her. Thrown into a world unlike their own, they must quickly adapt to survive.

Dystopian novels are all the craze these days and with so many out there I was hesitant to start another.  However, I couldn't put this down, I read straight through the night.  This book is a great mix of The Hunger Games, The Matched Series, and the Delirium Novels.  There are fights, a guy risking it all for a girl, and forbidden love.  Of course, there are the usual dystopian aspects like some sort of rebellion, a broken down way of life, and someone always fighting for their life.  I am so glad I picked this book up because it is a darn good dystopian tale.

This books starts out running without a page wasted with filler, just pure goodness.  Olivia's entire existence is illegal and only hours after being "matched" with Joshua she almost loses everything.  Joshua runs to her rescue and together they depart for Haven;  a city just as promising as District 13.  However,  it is not as pleasant or safe as they thought.  Joshua and Olivia's love is tested in Haven and it broke me to pieces wondering how it would all end.  With the last set of working ovaries in the world, Olivia's life might not end happily after all.  AHH dystopian novels.

I would recommend this book to anyone that loves dystopian novels and any YA readers!  Ruth Silver created a dystopian world that is unique, twisted, and just so darn intriguing.  The way the book ends leaves you hungry for more!

Genre: YA Contemporary
Rating: 3/5

Synopsis via Goodreads:

Everything has been downhill since Zoey Trask’s mother was murdered in a random mugging. Her younger brother, Ben, is on the autistic spectrum and needs constant supervision. It’s senior year, and she’s the new girl at a weird private school in Old Town Alexandria, VA, full of kids who seem too nice to be true—including a very cute boy named Pete. Aside from half-forgotten martial arts and survivalist skills that her widowed father insisted on teaching her (because that is excellent for her social life), Zoey has nothing to offer Pete or anyone else.

Then Dad is kidnapped. Zoey suddenly finds herself sole caretaker of a younger brother she barely understands. Worse, Ben seems to hold the key to their father’s disappearance in his Dream Diary, a bizarre journal of names and places Ben claims that their mother shares from beyond the grave. And as if Zoey doesn’t have enough on her plate, there’s Pete, who stubbornly refuses to leave her side.

Relying on the skills she never wanted to learn—Dad might have had his reasons after all—Zoey is plunged into a lethal battle to rescue her father, protect her brother, and determine the identity of her family’s true enemy.

Thoughts:
I am not going to lie, I totally picked this book by it's cover. I was also very intrigued by the synopsis and it ended up being an ok story.  Contemporary is not my usual YA sub genre but I always end up liking anything with a mystery component.  Only a couple of chapters into the book Zoey's dad is kidnapped.  She spends the rest of the book trying to find and save her dad.  She also meets a boy along the way, Pete, who helps her to find him.  The love story is minimal but it is there. The story is a bit far fetched and over the top but I really enjoyed Zoey's character.  She is lovable and quirky!  I also enjoyed the way that she tries to take care of her brother Ben.  She sort of fails miserably but it ends up ok in the end.  Another dislike I had was the use of flashbacks.  I would be deep in the suspense of the story and then bam, a flashback.  I understood that she was trying to provide emotional connection to the characters but the momentum of the story was often lost.  Momentum and flow are huge in a suspenseful mystery.  I would definitely read the next in the series (if there is one) and would recommend this book to contemporary YA lovers!
