Up This week :

Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.
By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.
As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

When I asked Rachel Hawkins if She has a favorite cover she replied:

I'm REALLY into the German covers. So fairy tale-ish and lovely! :)

Do you Agree? Or is another your favorite?

I - Kind of agree, It's my second favorite, I like that they have a hint of the school in the background, and that they didnt make the MC look like a little school girl, but at the same time, it is very fairy tale ish, And I didn't really get that feel from the book. My favorite is the US Hardcover, its still not perfect, but it does match up with the characters and a bit more of the feel of the book.

As for the other covers.... US paperback is OK.. not great, I don't really get the wings :s but it's not the worst of the bunch. The UK and  Polish are too "preppy" for me, and the focus is not on the MC, the UK one I prefer over the Polish though. The spanish does not fit for me at all, I can't make the connection the the story. Then we have the Bulgarian... oh. What. Were.They. Thinking?! It seems to me they were trying to pull in a whole different audience. The background, is cool. The Girls?! WTH? They do not dress like that believe me.. sigh. definitely not a fan.

Tell me your thoughts in the comments!!

  1. Ooh, I haven't seen the US paperback cover before! I really like that it uses silhouettes. It's very intriguing. I also like the UK version.

And I totally agree about the Bulgarian cover. What is up with it?!

  3. Reading the description, I'm having a hard time connecting with any of the covers. Maybe it's different when reading the book? Visually, the English Hardback and German are ones I'm more likely to pick up. The Spanish one maybe but I don't connect that image at all with a "going to school" kind of book. And the rest... remind me of the cover of the movie "The Craft" but I'd be confused once I got to reading the book and found that none of the people on the cover are the MC.

  4. Sigh. i wanted to reply to you each individually! But Blogger has not been liking me with its new reply thread feature.

@Penelope. I enojoy the Uk version as well, at least out of all the school girl looking ones. I liked the silhouette one until I noticed the Cheesy witches hat and broom :s but that could just be me.

@Petra the german cover is an eye grabber for sure!

@jazu ... omg.. Finally! It was bugging me what it reminded me of and your right! It is set up just like the craft! Now I should say the three girls on the cover do have a significant role.. they just are not really likeable so why put them on the cover? as for connecting. I do think after reading the book the 1st cover connects the most. The MC is kinda awkward. - though maybe a little less than the actress in the photo lol. She also has a relative that is almost a mirror image of her - hence the reflection in the pond :)

  5. I like the Polish cover best, modern with just a hint of magic. Looking at the Bulgarian cover I am forced to ask, "Are they all the same book? Or has someone rewritten the content just for Bulgarian readers?" Seriously! I wouldn't let my girls read that!
